Developing Your Project’s Mission Statement

A project’s mission statement is a brief answer to the question “why is this project being undertaken?” Examples of project mission statements are:

  • The Re-Alignment Project is an organizational development initiative that will result in the increased collaboration among the product development and manufacturing divisions, thus accelerating time to market on new products and existing product enhancements.
  • The Productivity Project is a joint process re-engineering and application development initiative that will result in streamlining the marketing and sales processes, thus enabling the workforce to focus on high-value interactions with existing and potential customers that leads to revenue increases.

  • The Share Project is a joint technology and cultural initiative that will implement internet portal and document management tools across the organization, which will facilitate the management and sharing of information within and among the organization’s functional areas. (continued)

Most people think of an organization chart when we first mention a blueprint.  But organization structure is only one layer of a blueprint - the only information it provides is who is accountable for the various functional areas of the organization and the intended reporting/decision making allocations.
